My introduction to 10mm came as a Colt Delta Elite I bought a few years ago. It has fired a few thousand rounds in my neighborhood with unsurpassed reliability.

Most people understand that 10mm is recoil and the height of the Delta Elite helps absorb the recoil.

The Glock 40 fills a curious niche in the shooting world that many Glock enthusiasts have yet to encounter.

Like all other Glocks, it is built on the company's standard polymer frame construction and block slide. Like the elusive Glock 17L, the Glock 40 has a 6-inch long barrel and matching slide that competitive shooters love.

It's a bit lighter than the Delta Elite at about 32 ounces. However, the Glock 40 should still be big enough to make a powerful 10mm round manageable.

With its large sight range (8.3 inches) and full-size grip, the Glock 40's appeal to competitive shooters is self-evident. But is it the right gun for some shooters looking for something more fun or defensive? Can the Glock 40 be more than a racing gun?

Everything about the Glock 40 makes it feel like the grandchild of Glocks. It's nearly identical to the legendary Glock 17L, meaning the Glock 40 is powered by the largest Glock ever.

Compared to the 17L, the Glock 40 is slightly shorter. However, it does have some width and weight – extra beef to handle the high ballistic pressure from the 10mm round. From

All the controls on the Glock 40 feel like any other Glock: deliberate, focused, and secure. "We added this feature to make the gun even more attractive," said a Glock engineer. However, the Glock 40 still looks like a Teutonic sportsman.

The work-sized Glock 17 looks great next to the Glock 40. Shooters with big gloves will appreciate the Glock 40's strong grip.

The Glock 40 shares a full-capacity 15-round magazine with its shorter sibling, the Glock 20. Factory 10-round magazines are also available for those in states with magazine capacity restrictions.

Glock industry sights are debated with religious fervor, with all sides rightfully pointing out their strengths and weaknesses. The Glock 40 I tested came with the basic white frame hardware that most Glocks come with.

They worked well in my eyes. It's worth noting that the Glock 40 is now available in a MOS configuration to accommodate a reflex sight, which will please many.

With a 6-inch barrel, the powerful Sellier & Bellot 180-grain FMJ rounds I ran hit an impressive 1,328 feet per second.

But the most interesting thing is what I did not feel: a shock like an earthquake. Combining the size of a Glock with the recoil absorption of a polymer frame, the Glock 40 was incredibly maneuverable.

Being a Gen 4 Glock grip, they have a tactile design that is easy to grip and the finger lines fit my large mitts well. A soft opening under the handle made tactical reloading easier.

It quickly became apparent that the Glock 40's carbine-length sight radius and advantageous 10mm bullet drop made this rifle ideal for long-range operations.

At 50 yards, the biggest thing keeping me from holes in the 10 ring was my pallor waiting for the bounce.

Even after 50 rounds I still expected the gun to do more than that. However, with consistent breathing and focus on the front sight, the Glock 40's long barrel got the goods where I wanted them.

A series of three shots at 25 yards convinced me that the Glock 40 learns very well to handle the predictable trips of high-powered cartridges.

I Like Big Guns And I Cannot Lie: First Look At The Glock G40

Like all of these pistols, the Glock 40 has a large slide—all the better to absorb the massive recoil of the 10mm Magnum round.

Glock pistols have one of the most prominent aftermarket parts and accessories available. However, the Glock 40 lags here. Other parts such as the connector spring and trigger assembly are shared with .45 ACP caliber Glocks.
