The view from the roof of the Coronado Navy Lodge - a beautiful view of Point Loma south to Mexico - can be a bargain at twice the price.
The Navy renovated the 42-year-old seaside lodge and expanded it to 305 rooms, making it the largest Navy Lodge property in the world.
For $40 million, the Navy demolished 90 rooms built in 1969 and added 205 nautical-themed rooms. It transformed the North Island Naval Air Station property from a middle-of-the-road Holiday Inn experience to a destination hotel.

The views offered there tend to rival some properties on the California coast, said Alan Reay, president of Atlas Hospitality Group, a hotel brokerage and consulting firm in Irvine.
He mentions the Montage resort in Laguna Beach and the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay - which, of course, is more luxurious. But they also cost at least $375 a night.
Staying at the newly remodeled Navy hotel will cost only $85 to $125 per night for servicemen and military retirees.
The North Island hotel is scheduled to open quietly in the first week of January. The grand opening is on January 25.

The Navy Lodge program is part of the Navy Exchange Service Command, the umbrella group best known for on-site retail stores, known as exchanges, that sell everything from socks to computers at discounted prices. The Virginia-based command is run by a Navy captain.
The lodges and stores are considered a benefit provided to active duty soldiers, military retirees and their families. Room rates at Navy Lodges are 45 percent lower than at civilian hotels, and sailors save an average of 20 percent by shopping on base exchange.
The 40 Naval Lodges worldwide are funded by their own room revenue, according to the order's 2010 annual report. In 2010, the Navy Lodge chain had revenue of $9.3 million on $66.7 million in sales.
About 5 percent to 7 percent of sales are poured back into hotel renovations, such as the North Island site, hotel executive Shelly Schutzman said.

No direct taxpayer money was used for the upgrade, which was done by RQ Construction in Carlsbad, he said.
This project is the unique large hotel that is currently open in the region, Reay said. In the private sector, hospitality funding dried up during the deep recession.
The Navy chose North Island for the expansion because it had the highest turn-away rate of all cabins between 2000 and 2008. Before the demolition, the property said no to 97,000 potential guests. visitor a year. The last time the Navy expanded the lodge was in 1995, when it added 100 rooms.
Military families moving to or from a base in the San Diego area have priority rights, Schutzman said. These families can stay for several weeks while waiting to move into a new home.

With large rooms that sleep six, along with full-size kitchens and living areas, the new Navy Lodge will make these people comfortable - instead of sitting on their beds while eating, Schutzman said.
If not booked two weeks in advance, available rooms will be released to active duty military, military retirees and Department of Defense employees seeking leisure travel.
Service members on travel orders are paid a daily stipend that covers the cost of their room. Everyone pays out of pocket.
Some pieces of furniture in the room are curved to resemble waves, and the inside of the drawers are painted ocean blue. The color palette is lime green and Caribbean blue, which makes you think of a beautiful day in tropical waters.

By the pool - which is new - there is an integrated water fountain art piece that uses beach pads. When the buckets are filled with water, they tip over, splashing anyone underneath.
However, the real wow factor of the four-story hotel comes from the rooftop patio — a first for the Navy Lodge chain, Schutzman said.
On a clear day, the Coronado Islands in the distance look too close to hit a rock.
The property will offer grills and lounge furniture so Navy and Marine Corps families can enjoy a moment of joy during the headache of moving.

"They're deployed and their families are left behind. Then, they come back and have to uproot their families, put their furniture and everything in crates," Schutzman said.
